Ukulele Gent Is Coming to Salt Lake City!

The Salt Lake Strummers are excited to welcome Greg Gent — better known as Ukulele Gent — to Salt Lake City as part of his Orlando-to-Seattle Uke Life Road Tour!
Greg will lead a special workshop, “Learn a Song… and a Whole Lot More!”, followed by a one-hour play-along.
And this isn’t just about learning another song.
Greg’s workshop is about taking the songs we already love to play and adding those little extras that make them sound more musical, more interesting, and a whole lot more fun.
Strums. Riffs. Chord variations. Embellishments. Little tricks you can take home and use in song after song.
Whether you’re fairly new to the ukulele or you’ve been playing for years, Greg is customizing this workshop for the Strummers so there will be something for everyone.
Learn One Song — Take Home a Toolbox
Here’s how Greg describes the workshop:
“This workshop will teach you how to play a specific song… not just a basic ‘island strum’ version of the song, but a spiced-up version. We’ll cover strums, chords, riffs, etc. But by learning this song, you will learn techniques that can be applied to many other songs.”
Those techniques can find their way into songs like Margaritaville, Hound Dog, Sweet Pea, Harvest Moon, Home Grown Tomatoes, Jailhouse Rock, Moondance, Walk the Line, Mustang Sally and many others.
So don’t think of this as simply learning one more song.
Think of it as learning a few new ways to make all those songs you already play sound better.
And after the workshop, we’ll put the instruction aside and do what ukulele players do best:
We’ll play!
Greg will lead us in a one-hour play-along, so bring your ukulele and plan on spending the evening learning, laughing, and making music together.
Who Is Ukulele Gent?
Greg’s ukulele story started a little later than it might have. When he was 10 years old, his parents gave him a choice between two things he really wanted: guitar lessons or an aquarium. Guitar lessons sounded suspiciously like work. So Greg chose the aquarium. About 40 years later, he finally decided it was time to learn a musical instrument — and this time he picked up a ukulele. He’s been making up for lost time ever since.
Greg has developed a passion for music education and has become involved with ukulele clubs, festivals, workshops and play-alongs. He maintains an ever-growing Patreon learning community, is an ambassador for KLOS Ukuleles, and also represents Mya-Moe Ukuleles.
And a lot of ukulele players know him from somewhere else…
The Wednesday Night Play-Along
Before COVID, Greg had begun organizing local ukulele play-alongs. When in-person gatherings suddenly stopped, he wasn’t ready to stop playing music with people.
So he took the play-along online.
What began during COVID became a tradition that continues today: every Wednesday night, Greg hosts a live Facebook ukulele play-along, with players joining him from across the country and around the world.
His Ukulele Gent Facebook community now has more than 8,400 followers.
And that explains something you may have noticed…
Wait. Don’t the Strummers usually have workshops on Wednesdays?
Yes.
But there was no way Greg was going to abandon all those ukulele players waiting for their Wednesday night play-along!
So we’re making an exception and gathering on Tuesday night instead.
And Salt Lake City will still be part of Wednesday night’s fun.
On Wednesday, September 16 at 5:00 pm Mountain Time, Greg will broadcast his regular Wednesday Night Play-Along from the home of fellow Strummer Cindi S., and he’ll be joined by our own Dick Donohue.
So even after Tuesday night’s workshop, you can tune in Wednesday and play along again:
