We have been trying to make this happen for a long time. At one point, the Salt Lake Strummers even made a little video together with one simple message:

Well…

SHE’S COMING!

And somehow, we managed to make it even better: Victoria Vox is coming to Salt Lake City on her BIRTHDAY! 🎉

So we’re not simply bringing one of the biggest names in the ukulele world to Utah for two workshops and a concert, we’re throwing her a Birthday Bash!

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Victoria Vox for an entire day of ukulele, music, learning, laughter, friendship, cake, ice cream, games, and one terrific concert.

Now we finally get our chance—and we get to celebrate her birthday with her, too!
This is going to be one very special Saturday.

Meet the Birthday Girl: Victoria Vox

Victoria Vox is an award-winning singer-songwriter, performer, teacher, and longtime ukulele trailblazer.

A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Victoria began playing ukulele in 2003 and has spent more than two decades demonstrating just how expressive, versatile, and downright surprising four little strings can be.

Her music blends elements of pop, jazz, indie folk, chanson, and more. Using looping and bass effects, she creates rich, layered arrangements that can make one ukulele—and one performer—sound much bigger than you might expect.

And then there’s the mouth trumpet. Yes, mouth trumpet.
Victoria’s signature jazz-inspired vocal technique has helped make her famous well beyond the ukulele community. It has taken her to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and earned her coverage in The Wall Street Journal.

She has appeared on the cover of Ukulele Magazine multiple times, is fluent in French, and has built an international following as both a performer and teacher.

Her music can be joyful, quirky, thoughtful, funny, tender, and deeply emotional.

And on October 17, she’s spending her birthday with us! We think that calls for cake (and ice cream).

Workshop One: Get in the Groove

We’re starting the day by getting that strumming hand moving. In Get in the Groove, Victoria will take a simple chord progression and use it to explore different rhythms, grooves, and strumming styles.

We’ll experiment with sounds inspired by:

Pop
Jazz
Ska
Swing
Blues
Reggae
Bluegrass
And even opera!

You’ll work on loosening up your right hand, developing more interesting strums, and learning how to add a well-placed chunk here and there. Victoria describes this workshop as a strumming crash course that is groovy, hands-on, and 100% fun.

That sounds like a pretty great way to start a Birthday Bash. 🎂

Workshop Two: I’ll Be at the Barre — Plus Mouth Trumpet!

Do barre chords make you want to quietly put your ukulele back in its case and pretend you never saw them? Victoria is here to help. I’ll Be at the Barre is a friendly introduction to the world of barre chords. You’ll explore different chord shapes and chord qualities and learn how to find chords anywhere on the ukulele neck.

The goal? Barre intimidation, no more!

And because we couldn’t possibly bring Victoria Vox all the way to Salt Lake City without doing this… She’s also going to teach us the basics of her iconic mouth trumpet. We’re not making any promises about what 100 ukulele players simultaneously attempting mouth trumpet will sound like. But we’re pretty excited to find out! 🤪

Bring Your Lunch and Stay With Us

We’ll take a 45-minute lunch break between workshops. We encourage you to brown-bag your lunch and eat with us. There are places nearby to grab food—including a KFC right next door—but most people find that bringing lunch is easier and a lot more fun.

Days like this aren’t only about what’s happening at the front of the room.

Lunch gives us a chance to sit around with old friends, meet some new ones, talk ukulele, compare instruments, swap stories, and spend time with other people who enjoy making music as much as we do.

So bring a sandwich, bring a salad, bring whatever makes you happy…

…and hang out with us.

Bring Your Ukulele — and Your Music Stand

Victoria will provide workshop handouts in both digital and printed formats.

Please bring a music stand or iPad or another suitable stand for whichever format you prefer to use. Keep in mind that there will be a limited number of printed handouts.

And this one probably goes without saying: Bring your ukulele! You’re going to need it.

Then It’s Time for Birthday Cake!

We couldn’t invite Victoria to spend her birthday with the Salt Lake Strummers and not throw her a party.

So after the afternoon workshop, we’re putting down the ukuleles for a few minutes and bringing out the birthday cake and ice cream.

After all, how often do you get to celebrate a birthday with one of the ukulele world’s best-known artists?

After spending the day learning from her, laughing with her, celebrating with her, and perhaps discovering previously unknown mouth-trumpet abilities…

We’ll get to sit back and hear why Victoria has become such a beloved performer in the ukulele world. And this isn’t a giant concert hall where you’re watching someone perform from 200 feet away. This will be an intimate concert with an extraordinary musician—after you’ve already spent most of the day together.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn from Victoria, hear her perform, meet her, and very likely have a chance to chat, get an autograph, and wish her a happy birthday yourself.
