Two Saturdays. Two Ways to Be Part of Something Bigger.
One of the things we love about the Salt Lake Strummers is that playing the ukulele gives us plenty of reasons to get together, have fun, and make music with other people.
This August, we have two very different opportunities to do exactly that — one close to home and one that connects us with musicians around the world.
Saturday, August 22 — Cheer on the Strummers at the Kaleidoscope Festival!
A group of Salt Lake Strummers will be performing at the Kaleidoscope: Aging with the Creative Spirit Festival, presented by the Utah Commission on Aging.
Kaleidoscope celebrates creativity throughout our lives and encourages older adults to keep creating, learning, participating, and trying new things. That seems like a pretty natural fit for a bunch of people who decided that learning to play a little four-stringed instrument sounded like a good idea!
A group of our Strummers will perform a short set of about eight songs, and we’d love to see a big Strummers cheering section in the audience.
The Strummers perform at 2:30 PM.

Saturday, August 29 — Play Music on the Porch Day: Play for Peace
One week later, we’re going from a Utah celebration to a worldwide one.
Play Music on the Porch Day began with a wonderfully simple idea:
What if for one day everything stopped, and we all just listened to the music?
On August 29, musicians in communities around the world will step outside and make some music together.
This will be the third year the Salt Lake Strummers have participated, and we’re keeping it simple: bring your ukulele, bring a chair, and come hang out with your Strummer friends for some music and fun.
This year’s theme is “Play for Peace,” so we’ll include songs that remind us that music has a remarkable way of bringing people together — even when the rest of the world seems determined to pull us apart.

Two Saturdays.
One day we get to represent the Strummers in our broader Utah community. The next, we get to join musicians around the world.
But really, they’re about the same thing:
Showing up. Being together. Having some fun. And making the world just a little better with a few ukulele chords.
