Singing is often considered the heart of ukulele playing, turning the instrument from a simple chord machine into a storytelling tool. Because the ukulele is generally a chordal instrument rather than a melodic one, the voice provides the melody — making the two inseparable for many players.

We recently had a great workshop with Avery Hill on learning to play and sing at the same time. Now we’d like to take it up a notch and sharpen our vocal skills by learning from local choir director and ukulele teacher Ryan Taylor.

What You’ll Learn

Ryan will teach us some important vocal fundamentals:

• Breathing techniques to improve voice quality
• Blending techniques — how to listen to your neighbor
• Syncopation — singing those tricky syncopated notes
• Harmonizing skills and techniques

What to Bring

Ryan will be teaching us using the song “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” guiding us through three-part harmonies. The music is proprietary, so we’re unable to post it on our website, but digital and paper copies will be provided at the workshop.

Please bring:

• Your ukulele and a music stand
• Your device for the digital copy

We’ll practice playing and singing the song together — it’s not a difficult one to play, and note that this is not the version in our Music Library.
